I hold her all night. She falls asleep in my arms and I doze here and there, but we’re both awake a lot of the time too. She cries intermittently throughout the night and I am there to wipe her tears away. I have so many things I want to say, so many questions I want to ask, but none of it is important now. My job is to just let her know that I’m here to hold her without any conditions.

When the sun rises, she is dead to the world, and I’m awake wondering how she’ll feel when she wakes up. Will she want me here or will she feel uncomfortable knowing that I’ve seen her falling apart? I lie there as long as possible and then when it’s time to get ready, I email Shel and ask her to clear my appointments for the day. Something has come up and I need a day off. It will be at least an hour before she sees it but still time enough to cancel everything. I let Alex out and make a pot of coffee, stepping out onto her balcony. I’m out there for about twenty minutes before I get the odd sensation that makes the tiny hairs on my neck stand on end.

I look into the trees on either side and the beach ahead and all I see is a small boat on the water. I stand up and practically run into the house. The boat. It looks out of place to me.

What the fuck? Have they found Cort? And did I lead them straight to her?

Inside her house, I rub my hand across my face and pour another cup of coffee, my hand shaking a bit as I lift it to my mouth and sip. Fuck me.

When she comes into the room behind me, my cup clatters as I set it on the counter. I have to force my brain to calm down before I speak because I don’t want to make the situation worse for her than it is.

I turn to her and hold out my arms. She shuffles into them and we both breathe easier when she’s engulfed in my protection.

“Did you get any sleep?” she asks.

“Yeah, I slept a little bit. How are you feeling this morning?”

“Like I got hit by a truck.”

“Why don’t we go back upstairs and try to sleep a little bit more?”

“That coffee lured me downstairs.” Her head leans back and she looks into my eyes, smiling weakly. Her poor eyes are nearly swollen shut and I want to pick her back up and hide her from the rest of the world.

“Let’s get you some of it then. Here you go.” I reach for a mug and pour the coffee with one hand, my other arm still hugging her tight against my chest.

“What did I do to deserve you?” She kisses my chest and takes the coffee eagerly.

“I’ve been asking myself the same question about you—I know I don’t come close to deserving you, but I’m all in, Cort.
